ENEA<\/strong>, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development<\/strong>, developed a method to accelerate the tomato breeding<\/strong> cycle as part of the European project HARNESSTOM<\/strong>. Tomatoes are one of the most widely cultivated crops in the world, essential to the Mediterranean diet and rich in antioxidants like vitamin C, provitamin A, and lycopene. However, their long generation time (65\u2013100 days) limits the number of annual cycles, slowing down innovation in horticulture farming<\/strong>.
\nBy using a controlled growth chamber, ENEA aimed to reduce breeding timelines and speed up varietal selection. Tomatoes are grown inside climate-controlled growth chambers, where light intensity (300\u2013600 \u00b5E), photoperiod, temperature, and humidity are finely regulated. The use of Ambralight grow light for indoor plants<\/strong> allows year-round production, increasing the number of generational cycles compared to traditional greenhouse or field cultivation. The precise control of environmental parameters leads to faster and more uniform development\u2014ideal for breeding programs. The artificial lighting was specifically designed to enhance the effect of light on photosynthesis<\/strong>, enabling intensive crop cycles without seasonal limitations. This solution is particularly valuable in modern horticulture farming where predictability and productivity are key.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

ENEA installed an indoor cultivation system equipped with MB2451D LED lamps featuring a fixed LED light spectrum<\/strong> and Osram LEDs<\/strong>. These grow light for indoor plants<\/strong> ensure uniform light distribution in both intensity and spectral quality. The light output is constant and calibrated to support vital tomato plant processes, particularly the effect of light on photosynthesis<\/strong>, helping accelerate plant development and increase overall growth robustness. The lighting system is also dimmable to accommodate different phenological stages, making the environment highly controllable and optimized for fast breeding cycles and indoor research.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

ENEA selected the MB2451D model for its ability to maintain optimal lighting conditions in large-scale indoor spaces. Ambralight later introduced ELETTRA<\/strong>, the next-generation evolution of this lamp. Available in a multichannel version, ELETTRA<\/strong> allows precise adjustment of both light intensity and the LED light spectrum<\/strong>, supporting the physiological needs of the plant at each stage. It was designed for high-performance research and commercial indoor cultivation systems, particularly in growth chambers<\/strong> with little or no access to natural light. Its durability and energy efficiency make it ideal for experimental setups requiring consistent, targeted lighting conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
