He needed to keep all year basil production at a stable rate to meet customer requirements and preserve impeccable quality. The idea of using a vertical farm came to reduce greenhouse running costs, fertilizer and water usage. By structuring a closed environment and using hydroponic technology Mr Gariglio dream could be achieved.
Without any natural light reaching the plants, the whole structure had to rely totally on LED lighting to survive. The room was built to contain 6 shelves of 4 stories each. The LED lamp chosen was Ambra Light AE32 with its extra slim outfit and low voltage functioning. With AE32 it was possible to give the correct amount of light to standardize the growth and give basil leaves a perfect green colour, a common challenge for indoor farming projects.
